The league was established in 1958 as an organization formed to provide a program for the youth of the Pleasant Hill area in cooperation with the Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District, the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and Diablo Valley College.

LEVEL 1 mandatory classroom clinic for any volunteer umpire NEW to PHBA.  This clinic is the first step of a 2-step process necessary to qualify as a PHBA umpire.  The clinic will provide the new volunteer with an understanding of what PHBA is about, the expectations of the Umpire Leadership Team (ULT) of its umpires, and the basics of being a Base umpire.  This class will provide the new volunteer with preliminary knowledge to be applied during Field Day training.

Field Day training is the second step of the 2-step process towards becoming a PHBA umpire.  To complete LEVEL 1 Base umpire training and qualify the trainee as a member of the Blue Crew, we move from the classroom and into the field.  It's now time to take what was learned in the classroom and experience how to apply it in the field.  PHBA players will be on-hand to assist by providing live action play to help you get comfortable with game play.

This clinic is also required for returning LEVEL 1 and 2 umpires to reinforce their previous training and refresh their skills for the upcoming season.

Field Day training is mandatory for all LEVEL 2 and below umpires.

This clinic is for those returning volunteer umpires who want to do more than just work bases at LEVEL 1 and LEVEL 2 and believe they can handle the rigors behind the plate.  Beyond just calling balls and strikes, you will learn how to work with your partner, the duties and responsibilities of the Plate umpire as well as proper positioning for plays at the plate and 3rd base.  For returning LEVEL 3 and above umpires, this clinic is expected to be a refresher course in plate mechanics as preparation for the coming season.

Field Day training is mandatory for all returning LEVEL 3 umpires.

LEVEL 4/LEVEL 5 Advanced Mechanics Training

Are you a returning LEVEL 3 umpire?  Are you ready to step up to the faster, more realistic aspects of baseball and softball at the National level?  Do you feel you are capable to take on the role of Umpire in Chief (UIC) for Pioneer, American, and eventually National ball games?  If you answered 'YES' to these three questions, then the advanced mechanics portion of our umpire training Field Day is for you.

This training will familiarize you with the rule differences and faster, unique elements of National division games, as well as the responsbilities of UIC for Pioneer, American, and National games.  It will require returning LEVEL 3 umpires to extend their Field Day training to accommodate this additional training for qualification.

For returning LEVEL 4 and 5 umpires, this clinic is mandatory and is a refresher course as preparatoin for the coming season.

Blue Crew Pre-Season Kickoff

The final hoorah for the Blue Crew before Opening Day the next weekend.  This is one of two opportunities during the season for the entire Blue Crew (veterans and new umpires) to come together as a unit to introduce themselves to each other.  This get-together will the ULT the chance to reinforce our expectations of the Blue Crew for the upcoming season, to review and clarify rules, review odd plays from the preceding season, hand out recognition and awards from the 2017 season, and generally talk shop over BBQ and soda (water included).  This is an ALL Blue Crew affair intended as final preparation for the new season and establish the Blue Crew bond.  So, COME ON DOWN!

OPENING DAY!!  This is what the kids, managers/coaches, parents, AND umpires have been waiting and training for.  The season kick's off this day!  The Blue Crew provides much needed traffic control at Sequoia MS and PO Park.  Additionally, you will be able to join the players, managers/coaches, commissioners, and board members in the parade from Sequoia MS to Pleasant Oaks Park for the opening festivities and games that start the season.  Please join us!
